Reduce, Re-use, Recycle

The improvement in the volume of materials we recycle has been impressive over the last 10 years however recycling should really be seen as a last resort behind reducing the use of raw materials and secondly looking to re-use them.

We identified a few gaps in the recycling options open to villagers. Unfortunately we have been unable to introduce any glass recycling but we have a box in the Post Office where customers can place their spent batteries. We empty the box and take the batteries to the Community Recycling centre at Lavenham whenever someone is going that way. We have recycled many hundreds of batteries that would probably have otherwise ended up in landfill.

Green Energy Nayland

Our flagship project is the creation of a community energy co-operative called Green Energy Nayland; GEN for short. The company has raised funds by selling shares to local people and used the money to install solar photo-voltaic cells at Nayland Primary School and Ferrier's Barn day centre. Income from selling the electricity, supported by government Feed in Tariffs (FiT) creates a profit that pays investors annual interest similar to a company share dividend.

Nayland School

Nayland Primary School has had an active 'Green Team' for some time and through a range of actions, including composting food waste, energy awareness and the eco-garden the school was awarded the Bronze Award by the Eco-Schools programme in 2008 and followed up with the Silver Award in 2009.

The enthusiasm of the school pupils was also a driving force behind the GEN project as we were set the challenge of installing our solar panels before the current eco-team moved up to secondary school. Following on from the solar panels, electrical wholesaler Senate Electrical agreed to install low energy LED lights through out the school and a sophisticated energy monitoring system. The kids can now compete to see which is the most energy efficient classroom!

Michaela is leading an initiate to get the school recognition for all it's good work by applying for the top level Green Flag Eco School status.

TN has been involved in a number of food events, including the Music and Food festivals where we organised local food stalls and demonstrations.

Community Events

We have established a regular calendar of events that we support. We organise a guided walk at the summer and winter solstice, we have a family BBQ at the allotments in late August and we run the kitchen during the Xmas fayre in the village hall, offering a range of soups made from local ingredients.
